Winter Dryness? Try a Photo Facial (IPL)

In winter, cold outdoor air and indoor heating can significantly reduce skin moisture.

This often leads to tightness, rough texture, dullness, and makeup that doesn’t sit as smoothly.

If your skin feels dehydrated despite good skincare, it may be time to support the skin condition more directly.

What is a Photo Facial (IPL)?

A Photo Facial—commonly referred to as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light)—uses controlled light energy to help improve the appearance of overall skin tone and texture.

It is often chosen to address the look of:

  • winter dullness and uneven tone

  • visible pores and rough texture

  • post-acne marks (lingering redness or discolouration)

  • reduced firmness and a tired-looking complexion

Why pores can appear more noticeable in winter

Dehydration can make the skin surface feel less smooth, which can emphasise pores.

For combination or oily skin, winter dehydration may also encourage congestion, creating a “dry yet shiny” feeling.

By supporting skin clarity and texture, IPL can help pores look more refined over time.

Post-acne marks (not active acne)

Post-acne marks can present as:

  • residual redness

  • brownish discolouration (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation)

  • uneven texture

IPL can be appropriate when the main concern is the appearance of marks and uneven tone, rather than active, inflamed breakouts.

If your skin is currently very irritated or inflamed, the treatment plan should be adjusted accordingly.

Suitable skin concerns (who tends to benefit)

A Photo Facial (IPL) may be suitable if you are looking to improve:

  • dehydration-related dullness

  • uneven tone

  • visible pores / congestion-prone texture

  • post-acne marks (redness or discolouration)

  • overall radiance and a more even-looking complexion

When IPL may not be recommended (or requires extra caution)

IPL is not suitable for everyone. Extra care is required if you:

  • have a recent tan, sunburn, or use self-tanners

  • are pregnant (policies vary by clinic)

  • are using isotretinoin (Accutane) now or recently

  • have active infection, open wounds, or severe inflammation

  • take medications that increase photosensitivity

  • have a history of light-triggered seizures

  • have very deep skin tones or a strong tendency to hyperpigmentation

(treatment settings and device choice must be carefully selected)

Your skin condition on the day matters, so intensity should always be adjusted with safety as the priority.

Aftercare (especially important in winter)

For best results and comfort:

  • focus on hydration and a gentle routine

  • wear SPF daily (UV exposure continues year-round)

  • avoid strong exfoliation for a few days

  • avoid tanning and high heat (sauna / very hot baths) immediately after treatment

Winter does not have to mean compromised skin comfort.

If dryness, visible pores, or post-acne marks are affecting your complexion, an IPL Photo Facial can be an effective seasonal choice.
